Caribbean Carnival // Spice Mas Grenada 2019 // Jab Jab // Fancy Mas // Soca music

Spice Mas – the loudest, fabulous and outstanding cultural event everybody in Grenada was looking forward to!
Carnival takes place on the second Monday and Tuesday of August each year and attracts a lot of people from around the World. Though there are only two official days of the festival the parties begin weeks ahead of that;)
Early in the morning at 4am on the Monday of the festival masqueraders pour into the streets of St. George’s by the thousands for J’ouvert, the start of the carnival celebrations. For Grenadians, this is the heart of Carnival, and it’s all about the Jab Jab, or devils. For detached onlookers like foreign tourists and cruisers this probably is the craziest, the wildest, the weirdest and the scariest form of Carnival bacchanalia like you’ve experienced before! But for locals it’s obviously the favorite transcendental part that call for the soul and spirit to free up!
“…the traditional Jab-Jab or Devil Mas bands emerge from the darkness of the night to parade freely through the town.”
Blackened with stale molasses, tar, grease, creosote or mud, and wearing little more than their horned helmets, these masqueraders in previous times set out to terrify onlookers with their grotesque appearance and repulsive dances”
Masqueraders make their way through the streets, dancing and chanting to the soca music, the energetic soundtracks which are a mashup of calypso, East Indian and African rhythms. Soca artists are challenged to come out with new music for each year’s carnival. Lyrics in Jab Jab Music tell the character’s story and speak to the spiritedness of the festival.

A parade of lights, held on Carnival Monday Night where spectators gather on the streets of St. George’s waiting to be entertained by thousands of masqueraders enjoying themselves whilst chipping down the streets to some of the local Soca music, in their neon and brightly colored garments and lighting instruments. So cheerful and enjoyable event!

Spicemas culminates with Pretty Mas on the Tuesday, where fancy, feathered masqueraders will find themselves prancing around what’s likely the most beautiful backdrop of all the Caribbean carnivals, the Carenage, Grenada’s postcard picturesque harbor and waterfront in the island’s capital of St. George’s.
