Deep Wreck diving // Shipwreck St.Croix, USVI // Buttler Bay shipwrecks, Frederiksted

Deep Wreck dive site at Buttler Bay is terrific! We love coming back there from time to time and always discover something new 👌🏼 This time there were a couple of huge Grey Angelfishes, so gorgeous!
This dive site (situated close to Frederiksted) include 2 shipwrecks: freighter Rosamarie and tugboat Coakley Bay.

The Rosa Marie is a 177 foot long steel hulled Venezuelan freighter. The deepest point of the Rosa Marie is about 117 feet (~33m) and was with her tower up near 80’. It was the first of wrecks in the area to be sunk intentionally. Going back in time the ship was delivering a cargo of cinder blocks to St.Croix in 1986 but as turned out the weight of cargo wasn’t balanced correctly and the ship flipped over to one side while her cargo was off loaded. Also it was discovered that the owner of Rosa Marie was trying to smuggle the diesel fuel onboard. In April of 1986 this hulking vessel was towed out to Buttler Bay and dynamited to sink it.

Close to Rosa Marie you find another shipwreck – oil-refinery tugboat named Coakley Bay – the newest wreck on St.Croix and one of our favorite. It looks amazing with its whimsical structure and the hull beautifully incrusted with live corals and sponges. Coakley Bay sits at about 60 feet with its tower up near 30 feet. School of Atlantic spadefish makes the tugboat their home.
